How Can I Feel Abundant When There’s No Money in the Bank?!

It’s a good question. And one I can personally relate to.

Struggle with money has been a theme of my adult life and was THE theme in my marriage. I know how it feels to lay awake at night worrying about the bills and the debt with that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. I have been there. It’s not pleasant.

If somebody had told me I could feel abundant when all of that was going on I would have thought they were insane. What a ridiculous notion!

But now I know differently. Earlier this year I became a Certified Money Coach and learned from some amazing teachers how to change my relationship with money. It has opened up my mind to a whole new way of thinking about money.

Since then I have been slowly applying what I have learned to my own life and helping my clients to do the same. I say slowly because my relationship with money was so dysfunctional that I have had to work hard to change my beliefs. And it is an ongoing journey.

What I have discovered is that I have a choice about how I want to feel about my money. I can choose to feel abundant, regardless of the amount I have or don’t have, or I can choose to feel scarce. When I think scarce ‘I don’t have enough’ thoughts, I feel scarce and fearful, AND I TAKE ACTIONS THAT GIVE ME A SCARCE RESULT. I prove myself right.

What I want you to know is this: Every result in your life has been created as a result of your thinking. To change your results you must first change your thinking. Our mind will always look for, and find evidence, to prove our thoughts.

So, how did I learn to think abundant thoughts even when there was no money in the bank?

I asked myself where in my life I was already abundant and what resources I had available to me. Here is what I found. I am abundant in my relationships – with my kids, my family, my friends, my clients, my business relationships. I am abundant in the availability of green open spaces that I get to walk in every day with my dog. And I am abundant in the work I do with my clients and in growing my business.

As for resources, I realised the best resource I have is me. I have the ability to use my skills, knowledge and experience to generate an income for myself and my family, while also being privileged to help my clients create important changes in their lives. I have amazing teachers, mentors and colleagues who are all invested in my success and who abundantly share their expertise, experience and support with me.

I also remembered my emergency back-up fund and that I have assets with a financial value.

When I look at my life from this perspective I realise I am already rich in so many ways. This thought makes me feel abundant, peaceful and centred. And when I am feeling this way I take actions that are far more likely to give me an abundant result.

I learned from my teachers that no amount of money can create feelings of safety, security and abundance within me. A pile of banknotes can’t make me feel safe -  it’s impossible. Only my thoughts can do that. I am safe if I believe I am.

And that’s the best news. Because while I can’t always control my bank balance, I can always choose my thoughts.

Where in your life are you abundant?
